Assemblages by Timothy Gaewsky
Colorful mixed media works incorporating lottery tickets among other things.
My work explores the relationship between desire and materialism, or more directly the ways in which desire for commodities, fortune, and instant gratification are facilitated through visual stimulation. My installations and mixed media assemblages draw aesthetic influences from diverse sources such as scratch-off lottery tickets, carnival games, toy packaging designs, pinball machine graphics and 8-bit video games. I'm drawn to the vibrant colors, flat, hard-edge shapes and playful graphical patterns. My aim is to manipulate these elements to entice a visceral response from the viewer; to lure them in by their deluded desires for instant gratification; but the work also disillusions the viewer. It interrupts their desires, causing them to consider the meaning of their impulses at the moment that it frustrates them.
