Paintings by Nolan Haan
Paintings of concrete blocks, cinder block walls, and cement.
I paint portraits of concrete blocks in acrylic on silk. These paintings are actually self-portraits, for they document my emotions, my states of mind—my life. The idea came one afternoon while working in a basement studio. Suddenly aware of the paint-splattered walls, I fell in love with the pits and scratches and ill-applied mortar. Each cement block gave evidence of my time spent in that basement, a diary. Why not let concrete blocks tell my story? I had found my muse.
