Permanent Receipts: Artworks by Shakeil Greeley
Laser etched receipts on clear or black acrylic plastic based on actual receipts collected over a two week period. The works were created to serve as a permanent record of his buying habits.
Consumption is an act that many people define themselves by. What shoes you wear, where you eat, the kinds of movies you pay to see. The list continues. This form of self-definition is a passive and ultimately unproductive way of relating to the world. In an attempt to critique this consumption, I have created permanent representations of what would normally be considered irrelevant, forgotten ghosts of buying patterns, receipts. I believe that people should seek to define themselves by production, and this project is simultaneously an act of producing from my own consumption habits as well as seeking to make people more conscious of their own.
