Down the Rabbit Hole: Paintings by Margo Selski
Paintings merging Flemish painting style with nineteenth-century society portraiture while also inspired by her Southern Gothic upbringing. The characters loosely resemble fairytale protagonists such as Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and Alice in Wonderland with juxtapositions of steampunk props with Victorian sensibilities to heighten the sense of uneasiness within her work.
My work is neither entirely classical nor entirely contemporary; neither entirely realistic nor entirely fantastical; neither entirely familiar nor entirely alien. I am interested in the balance between old and new, comfortable and uncomfortable, safe and unsafe. The paintings appear to be mannered and removed. However, they are in fact intensely autobiographical.See more of Margo's work here.
