Aquatic scenes that are half over/half under by award-winning wildlife photographer Matthew (Matty) Smith. In his words, "It marries the underwater world with our own familiar world and links the unknown with the known." Since shooting an above-and-below image has some technical challenges due to the difference in lighting and focus, he uses a strobe light for the underwater portion since it's darker and has less contrast and saturation.
My favourite part about going diving is the moment the water engulfs my mask at the start of the descent. It's the feeling of mystery of what I might find in the depths below. The best way I can communicate that feeling to others is in a picture format with an over/under photograph. It tells the story of what the ocean is all about for me.
