A new series by fine art photographer Michael Massaia that captures people sleeping in Central Park's Sheep Meadow. The portraits are oriented vertically to make them look like the people are suspended in the air doing some sort of dance. He states that "none of the people know I'm photographing them while they're out there laying in the sheep meadow (and other parks throughout the city), but I want the photos to have the perfection of studio shots."
I've been taking portraits of people sleeping in central park's sheep meadow since about 2006. That portfolio was entitled simply "Deep in a Dream–Sheep Meadow," but this year I started working on a variation within that portfolio which is entitled "Deep in a Dream–Sheep Meadow–Vertical Abstracts." For this portfolio I capture couples (in somewhat abstract positions) and then simply print them vertically and backwards to give the look of otherworldly suspension/dancing. The final prints are gold toned gelatin silver prints where the grass is severely burnt in to aid in giving the look of suspension. I handmake all of my final prints.See the complete portfolio here.
