A beautiful church in New Zealand made entirely out of living trees. Built by Barry Cox after developing an appreciation for church architecture while traveling the world, Barry dedicated four years of his life to construct this church on his property near Cambridge using his Treelocations business to move a variety of trees. Initially, he built it for himself as a "retreat from society" but word got around quickly and the church and its surrounding gardens are now available for public and private events.
I walked out my back door one day and thought, 'That space needs a church' – and so it began. I cleared the area in April 2011 and made the iron frame, drawing on all the research I had done over the years of studying churches. I wanted the roof and the walls to be distinctly different, to highlight the proportions, just like masonry churches.+
