New embroidered portraits by St. Louis-based artist Cayce Zavaglia. The works portray her friends and family using one-ply cotton, silk and wool to realize the figure with an acrylic paint background, separating the foreground from the background. Described as “Modern Pointillism,” Zavaglia developed the technique similar to those used in classical oil painting that allows her to blend colors and establish tonalities. The threads are sewn so they mimic the way brush marks are layered in painting to give the allusion of depth, volume, and form.
On view at Lyons Wier Gallery Nov 5 – Dec 12.
