Australian artist Anna Carey overlaps photography, drawing, film and sculpture to create her fragile cardboard constructions of iconic Stardust motels from across Australia and the Americas. Through memory, imagination and access to her immediate environment, Carey's creations are based on iconic architecture which she documents through photography and video to express a psychological sensibility beyond the physical facades. The camera lens magnifies the model with all its imperfections and reminds the viewer that the photograph has been constructed with a miniature object. This creates a disorientating experience for the viewer which opens up an imaginative space for one to pause and reflect on their own experiences embedded within the familiar spaces.
On view at Artereal Gallery through Apr. 2.
