To commemorate 75 years of the reconstruction of Rotterdam, MVRDV design a giant staircase consisting of 180 steps that leads up from the Stationsplein, outside Rotterdam Central Station, to the rooftop of the Groot Handelsgebouw, an iconic building in the history of the post-war reconstruction of the city. The scaffolding structure will take visitors 29 metres up to the roof top where a viewing platform offers stunning views of the city's skyline. The scaffolding responds to the angles of the Rotterdam Central Station, connecting the contemporary icon with a historic monument, whilst through its construction referencing the reconstruction that the city has experienced.
With this installation and in our exhibition we show what this city could look like if we do that in many places, engaging a series of our existing buildings and giving access to their roofs, to create a new, much more interactive, three dimensional and denser urban topography for the next city generation. – Winy Maas, MVRDV co-founder.The Stairs is open to the public through June 12 from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.
