A new series of photos by fine art photographer Michael Massaia that documents the jungle gyms along the New Jersey coastline. Shot during the off season, the playground equipment has its own unique architecture to make them attractive to kids and are made of many pieces of material such as wood, metal, PVC, and rope varieties. Different shapes including geodesics, rocket structures, and other configurations are seen in school playgrounds, parks, and backyards.
Unfledged Architecture is a portfolio that documents the lone beach, and bay front jungle gyms that are scattered along the New Jersey coastline. All of the images were captured in different shore communities during their off season when these towns are predominately vacant. The portfolio attempts to contribute to the long line of pure architectural photography. Seeing these shapes on the ground glass of my 5"x 7" camera, reinvigorated in me the excitement of seeing the unfledged and overlooked.
