New paintings of serene children alongside classic sewing machines and dated appliances by Florida-based artist Sean Mahan. He creates soft and subtle figurative works in graphite and acrylic washes with the wood panel showing through that adds a dimension of warmth and transparency to the works. Mahan’s aesthetic conveys a strange sweetness and innocence with analog devices that feature prominently as both an implement and subject in his imagery. His works celebrate the outdated and obsolete by representing older technologies, objects, and cultural ideals in an attempt to interrupt the alienating, and dominant, momentums of discard and overuse.
On view at Thinkspace Gallery October 15 through November 5.
