A fantastic recreation of a supernova using only an aquarium filled with ink and water by independent film maker and motion designer Thomas Vanz based in Magny, France. The short film entitled Novae is about an astronomical event that occurs during the last evolutionary stages of a star's life, whose dramatic and catastrophic death is marked by one final explosion. After studying the patterns of exploding stars using NASA's supernova animation, the appearance of nebulas and how ink flows in water, Vanz and his team dropped different colored inks into a tank and filmed them. The movements and interactions were then cut and re-edited in post-production to create a realistic-looking supernova without the use of CGI. He states that the film is also a tribute to Stanley Kubrick and Christopher Nolan's filmography.
