Currently on view at Yang Gallery are new paintings by Chinese artist duo Lai Shengyu and Yang Xiaogang, aka Tamen which means “they” in Mandarin. The exhibition presents works that incorporate traditional Chinese life, such as a bride by the river, with Western culture represented by famous artworks, characters, logos, and buildings floating on the ocean—symbols of the country’s recent meteoric industrialization and economic growth as well as modern consumerism.
Our pictures hold up a mirror to contemporary China. This mirror should not just show the outer layer of reality. We are much more concerned with the psychological effects of China’s rapid modernization on the people who live here.On view at Yang Gallery through January 31.
