New Mixed Media Artworks by Michael Mapes
Specimen boxes with varying subject matter that references entomological and forensic science. The boxes uses actual scientific materials such as insect pins, gelatin capsules, test tubes, specimen bags, magnifying boxes, and surgical thread. In addition, he takes hundreds of photographs and collects “biographical DNA” such as hair, food samples, fabric swatches, makeup, handwriting samples, fingerprints and personal ephemera. The photos are dissected and the original subject is reconstructed, incorporating the bio DNA, to create a unique interpretation.
