Maiden Creek: Paintings by Matthew Daub
Nearly monochromatic paintings depicting sites on a twenty-two mile stretch along Maiden Creek, a rural tributary of Pennsylvania’s Schuylkill River, and identified only by their latitude and longitude coordinates that serve as the title of each image.
I respond to my environment. Most of my subjects are gleaned from my surroundings; places I am familiar with and I have formed some attachment to—presently, my home in rural Pennsylvania. I often return to the same subject multiple times; not for reasons of nostalgia, nor am I trying to glorify the American landscape. I think it is more like a dog marking its own territory.
