Paintings by Asuka Hishiki
Paintings of vegetables inspired by illustrated books from childhood.
Ever since I was a small child, I liked two things: to paint, and to flip through the pages of illustrated books of insects, plants, and animals. Until I learned that, centuries ago, scholars took painters with them on their research trips around the world, I never thought of connecting the two. I immediately thought, “How wonderful it would be if I could spend my days traveling around the world drawing plants and insects. ” Instead of going out for adventures and finding exciting new species, I found beauty in ordinary vegetables and trees on a street. A common butterfly in my backyard became much more valuable than a rare undiscovered species.
