Paintings by artist collective Tamen (English translation: They) that juxtaposes elements of traditional Chinese life with symbols of the country’s recent meteoric industrialization and economic growth. Comprised of artists Lai Shengyu and Yang Xiogang, the duo collaborate on a painting adding upon each other’s work while placing emphasis on communication and dialogue. Using a realistic style, Tamen takes on characteristics of post-modernism, surrealism, critical realism, and traditional ink while impressing a sense of the fantastic on viewers.
Our pictures hold up a mirror to contemporary China. This mirror should not just show the outer layer of reality. We are much more concerned with the psychological effects of China’s rapid modernization on the people who live here.Tamen's works are available at Art + Shanghai Gallery.
